Packaging laser

Laser coding for packaging

Laser coding for packaging applies variable information directly to compatible packs during production. Macsa id helps manufacturers code date information, batch numbers, serialised data, barcodes, QR codes and DataMatrix codes on cartons, bottles, cans, rigid packs and flexible packaging—without ink or ribbons at the point of coding.

We select CO₂, fiber or UV laser technology according to the packaging material, printing or coating, required contrast, code size, line speed and marking position. Each application is tested on the actual pack to confirm code quality and packaging integrity before a solution is specified.

Coding variable data for packaging traceability

Packaging laser coding helps manufacturers apply fixed and variable information at the right stage of the production process. Typical applications include:

  • Best-before and expiry dates.
  • Batch, lot and shift codes.
  • Serial numbers and product references.
  • Barcodes, QR codes and DataMatrix codes.
  • Traceability data, logos and regulatory information.

The laser creates the code directly on the packaging surface by producing a controlled surface change or removing a suitable top layer. The result depends on the substrate, its colour, coatings, printing and the selected laser technology.

Choose the right laser technology for your packaging

CO₂ laser coding for cartons, bottles and selected plastics

CO₂ laser systems are widely used for packaging applications on paper, cardboard, glass, PET and selected plastics. They are suitable for date and batch coding, traceability data and 2D codes where the packaging material and required contrast have been validated.

Fiber laser coding for films, foils and metal packaging

Fiber laser technology can be suitable for printed films, foils, labels and metal packaging. It offers a non-contact option for applications that require durable coding and controlled interaction with the packaging surface.

UV laser coding for sensitive packaging materials

UV laser systems are appropriate for applications that require fine detail, good contrast or reduced thermal impact on sensitive films, mono-material structures and selected plastics. The final configuration should always be tested on the real packaging material.

Packaging formats we can assess

Macsa id packaging laser systems can be configured for a range of compatible packaging formats, including:

  • Cartons, cases and paper-based packaging.
  • Bottles, jars and rigid plastic containers.
  • Cans and metal packaging.
  • Trays, pouches, sachets, wraps and flexible films.
  • Primary and secondary packaging requiring variable traceability data.

The packaging structure matters as much as the visible surface. Material layers, inks, varnishes, coatings and barrier properties can all affect marking quality and must be considered during application testing.

Integration into packaging lines

A packaging laser coder must fit the production line as well as the pack. We assess line speed, product handling, available coding window, product detection, data inputs, extraction, guarding and operator access to define the most suitable integration.

Macsa id systems can be configured for continuous packaging processes and for applications where variable information changes between batches, products or production orders.

Validate code quality and packaging integrity

A laser should not be selected from a material name alone. We test the real pack, including its print, coating and final finish, to assess contrast, readability, code position, durability and any potential impact on the packaging structure.

For flexible packaging, this validation is particularly important. If laser coding is not the best fit for the material or message, we can also assess alternative technologies such as thermal transfer or inkjet coding.
